Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel, on June 9, 1981. Her parents, Avner Hershlag, a Israeli doctor, and Shelley Stevens, an American artist, met while students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They divorced when Natalie was three, and she was raised in Long Island, New York, by her mother and her stepfather, an insurance agent. Portman began studying dance when she was four, and she soon appeared in local ballet productions. At age 10, she made her film debut in the independent feature Léon (1994), playing the role of Mathilda, the young daughter of an assassin. In 1996, Portman enrolled at Harvard University, where she studied psychology. She continued to act, appearing in the films Beautiful Girls (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), and Anywhere but Here (1999). During her sophomore year, she took a leave of absence from Harvard to film the Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace (1999). She returned to the university after completing the movie, but she took another leave of absence in 2003 to film the sequel Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones (2002).
