When Hanks was 10, his mother married Fraser C. Simon, a successful periodontist, who later adopted Hanks. Hanks had an early interest in acting and appeared in several school plays; he later named the San Francisco actor Dave Thomas as one of his idols. He took the stage name 'Tom Hank'.
